THE FORMER SLAVE IS ARCHER ALEXANDER, THE LAST MAN CAPTURED UNDER THE FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT, WHOSE STORY WAS MADE FAMOUS BY WILLIAM GREENLEAF ELIOT.
