198-200 AD Septimius Severus AR Denarius (Extra Fine, XF) Laodicea "IVSTITIA" 198-200 AD Roman Empire AR Denarius Issued during the rule of Septimius Severus, the 21st Emperor of the Roman Empire (193-211 AD) Obverse features a bust of the emperor, facing right, with legend L SEPT SEV AVG IMP XI PART MAX Reverse depicts Justitia (Justice) holding patera and scepter, seated left, with legend IVSTITIA Septimius Severus (145-211 AD) was born in Leptis Magna in the Roman province of Africa. As a young man he advanced through the cursus honorum, and seized power after the death of Emperor Pertinax in 193 during the Year of the Five Emperors. Though his military expenditure was costly to the empire, Severus was a strong, able ruler. It has been said, "his daring ambition was never diverted from its steady course by the allurements of pleasure, the apprehension of danger, or the feelings of humanity." And his enlargement of the Limes Tripolitanus secured Africa, the agricultural base of the empire.
