They preserve its physiological pH (between 3.8 and 4.5) and thus contribute to the proper balance of the ecosystem. Lactobacilli play a major role in maintaining a healthy balance of the vaginal microflora and in the proper functioning of the urogenital system. There are circumstances in which "good bacteria" may be absent. This manifests itself in the form of unpleasant vaginal discharge, burning, pain and itching.
