Item description
Step back into early American history with this authentic 19th-century Albany Slip stoneware jug, a classic one-gallon whiskey or spirits vessel used throughout the Northeast and Midwest from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s. These jugs were utilitarian workhorses of the era?carried on farms, stored in pantries, and used by merchants, distillers, and households alike.
This example features the deep chocolate-brown Albany slip glaze made from natural clay deposits along the Hudson River. Stoneware coated with Albany slip was prized for its durability, glossy finish, and resistance to liquids, and it became the standard glaze for American whiskey jugs during the period.
The jug shows all the hallmarks of genuine early production:
? Wheel-thrown base with swirl marks
? Hand-pulled handle with finger indentations
? Rolled rim and classic shoulder form
? Unglazed bottom, accurate to 19th-century manufacture
At approximately 12?13 inches tall, it?s a true one-gallon size?the most iconic and displayable form.
Condition:
This jug has the wonderfully aged, barn-found primitive character collectors look for. There is visible glaze wear, mineral deposits, surface scuffs, and areas of slip loss, all consistent with 120+ years of storage and use. The body remains solid with no major structural cracks. Displays beautifully as a piece of authentic Americana.
Perfect For
? Primitive farmhouse decor
? Rustic kitchen or bar display
? Americana and 1800s collection
? Photography, set design, or vintage staging
? Anyone who loves true, unaltered antique patina
A genuine piece of 19th-century stoneware that brings history, warmth, and authentic texture to any space.
