Item description

Antique Chinese Mother-of-Pearl Fish Gaming Token Chip Gold Overlay Chain Necklace The chain measures 18" long, spring ring clasp, and tested positive for gold (10k-12k) overlay (is magnetic). It features an antique carved fish shaped mother-of-pearl Chinese Gaming token chip which measures 1-3/4" long. Unmarked as to the maker of the necklace. Chinese mother-of-pearl gaming counters were crafted by artisans in China between 1700 and 1840 for use in card games in the West, particularly for scoring and bidding. These counters, also known as fish chips, are thin, wafer-like pieces of mother-of-pearl, often featuring elaborate carvings. They were a popular trade item, especially with Great Britain and other European countries. Currently many chips are being made into Jewelry such as this fine piece.
