Item description

Really classic hinged box about 1 1/2" tall with miniature style artwork. Black all around, I believe it is cinnabar underneath. No sticker or anything on the bottom. For the longest time - although I haven't had it too long - I assumed this had to be Japanese made for export. However there appears to be a faint signature at bottom right. It appears to read "H. S.........sohn" possibly. You can barely make it out. But it seems very possible to me that with the scene and the name being Northern European, someone bought boxes like this and then painted them for sale. Yes it could be just a winter scene, but with the red and green so prominent you have to think Christmas. Very charming little box. Very Good condition with not much wear at all and the artwork is Excellent. I do not know how old it is, but I would be willing to be it will be a hundred years old or close to it before you know it.
