Item description
Dear buyer!
You bidding for
Antique Ottoman Apothecary Mortar Pestle Bronze C17th
SIZE - Approximately
(11cm) x (8.5cm) - 1150Gr
Pestle - 14.5cm
Mortars of this type with radiating flanges seem to have their origins in Moorish Spain of the 12th century, and possibly earlier (one in the Archaeological Museum of Cordoba is attributed to the 10th century.) Two examples from the Khalili collection are illustrated in Maddison Savage-Smith (1997, p. 299). These are attributed to around the 13th-14th centuries. An example from the 12th and 13th centuries is in the collection of the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris (see Instute du Monde Arabe, 2005, p. 185 for an illustration). Another example forms lot 161 at Christie's London 'Art of the Islamic and Indian Worlds, including Art from the Collection of Dr Mohammed Said Farsi', October 5, 2010.
The mortar here, like other examples, is of extremely thick cast bronze to allow for the repeated blows of a heavy pestle. These mortars were not necessarily intended for grinding spices for food, but for grinding herbs and other ingredients for the preparation of medicines and balms.
The condition of the item is exactly the same as you see it on the photos
