This is what is frequently called a stumping box, with a palette in the form of a leather surface on the inside of the lid. It was made by the famous Winsor and Newton, London, around the 1890s. These boxes are very collectible. This one is missing the interior separators it originally had. You can see where they were on the inside of the box. It has a thumb hole to allow the artist to hold it while drawing with the other hand. The interior label is in quite good shape the exterior one is mostly gone. The exterior of the box has expected wear and tear for a well-used item over a hundred years of age. This includes an assortment of used Lefranc et Cie Paris chalk pastels. The zip lock is not antique but helps keep them all together safely. Also included is an antique Library catalog card that was used to prevent items from falling out of the box's thumb hole. The handwriting on the card is beautiful. This is a truly rare and unique piece. A marvelous gift for the artists/collector in your life.
