Rebound, presumably in the 19th century, gilt ornamental panels to front and rear boards, very light wear to head of spine, text block foredges soiled, general light age toning and a small amount of presumably contemporary marginalia in the first of the four books (some bleeding through to the versos, one small ink spatter at the head foredge of p.21 (not effecting text), the bookplate of the Cantley Library affixed to front pastedown with withdrawal stamp thereon. Licensed by Robert Midgley on Nov. 25th, 1685, this profoundly logical treatise is a bit of Captured Tyme not only from the 17th century but from the very beginnings of western civilization. This 2nd ed is a bit of a scarce tome - being found in only 3 locations according to Wing A 3696. It was dedicated to the Honourable Coll. Henry Sydney, Ambassador Extraordinary from His late Sacred Majesty to the States of Holland ? quite the distinctive book indeed.
