CIVIL WAR, BROGAN, BOOTEE, SHOE FRAGMENTS, RELICS, DUG, TENNESSEE
This is a grouping of bootee or brogan shoe fragments, relics. Nice an assortment of toe and heel plates. Also includes the heart pattern heel and heel plate.
These were all recovered in the 1990?s during the construction of the new football stadium for the Tennessee Titans (Nissan Stadium) in Nashville, Tennessee. The current location of The Tennessee Titan?s Stadium was a prolific trash pit uncovered during stadium construction. Other brogan pieces were recovered at this site. This may have been a storage or dumps site which was probably during the Union occupation of Nashville, TN. This grouping of relics was acquired from Jeremiah Simmons of Tennessee, whom was a former Gettysburg NMP employee, who had these within his personal collection.
The leather fragment of layered sole section with wooden pegs is most likely from a soldiers 1851 Pattern Jefferson Bootee shoe. The stitch/Peg holes are very prominent on these pieces. This artifact measures approx.. 4-1/4? x 2-3/4? x OE? thickness and weighs approx.. 1 ounce.
What were the soldiers marching in? Serious walking calls for serious footgear. During the war, for most men, that meant brogans. What is a brogan? In essence, brogans are the halfway point between a standard shoe and a traditional boot.
The Civil War brogan was crude footwear by modern standards. The only thing between a soldier's feet and the cold, muddy ground, were their socks and two or three layers of leather. The leather soles were hard, uncomfortable, and slippery. Many brogans had horseshoe-shaped iron heel plates and/or hobnails, a kind of metal cleat, to improve traction and increase their boot's useful life. Despite their sturdy construction, brogans wore out quickly in the field. Soldiers had to get creative to keep from going barefoot. Soldiers who worked as cobblers before the war were quite the commodity, and sometimes could be pulled from their units to repair or rebuild brogans on the roadside as the army marched.
