Item description

Antique one-sided embossed photogravure depicting a scene of the Japanese Bridge and surroundings from the Columbian Exposition. The caption tells us this is a "view to the south from bridge near the Marine Cafe showing the Japanese Bridge to the Island in the foreground, the Government and Liberal Arts Buildings on the left, the Obelisk in the distance and the Electricity Building and dome of the Administration Building on the right." The World's Columbian Exposition was a world's fair held in Chicago in 1893 to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World in 1492. Published on heavyweight paper by D. Appleton Co., New York. Full size measures approximately 12.5 x 16.75. Recommended framing area including image, artist/title, and embossed inner white border (that portion of the border that would normally be visible after framing or matting) measures approximately 14.5 x 10. Condition: Print is in excellent condition aside from some very light age browning of white border along edges well outside the recommended framing area. There are no pin holes or tape marks anywhere on this antique print. Comments: Japan was the first country to reserve space at the exposition. The Japanese exhibition, costing $650,000, was set prominently on a wooded island in the central lagoon. Chicagoans arrived daily to watch the company of odd, merry and industrious Japanese artisans unpack and assemble their gift to America. What bright and nimble workers these Japanese are! wrote Harpers Weekly.
