Ancient Roman Coinage of Constantine II ~ Constantine the Great ROMAN EMPIRE CONSTANTINE II as Caesar 316-337 AD Son of and under CONSTANTINE the Great as Augustus BI Centenionalis / Follis. 21mm 3.35g. Trier mint, Struck c. 317-318 A.D. Struck under CONSTANTINE II as Caesar, and his father Constantine "the Great" as Emperor. Obverse: FL CL CONSTANTINVS IVN N C. Unabridged legend: Flavius Claudius Constantinus Junior Nobilissimus Casar?--Translation: Flavius Claudius Constantinus Junior noble Caesar (prince). Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Constantine II to right, seen from behind--Very attractive small bust type with much blank/negative space in contrast to the overcrowded busy obverses characterizing coins of the period. Reverse: PRINCIPI?IVENTVTIS (" To the Prince of the Youth") / F - T across fields, Constantine II, as prince of the youth, standing front in military attire, head to right, holding inverted spear in his right hand and globe in his left; ?ATR (A=first officina TRier) mint mark in exergue. Ref. RIC 172. RARE rated R1 in RIC, C. 143. RIC (Roman Imperial Coinage) is the general abbreviation for the set of 13 volumes of identification catalogs of Roman coins. RIC is the definitive / world standard scholarly reference. AU+ to MS Mint State dark/olive Red-brown patina. Gorgeous Coin, Striking image as prince of youth on reverse, hairline flan crack--this was likely occurred when minted; moreovr, it appears the hairline crack has "healed" closed via the formation of the surface patina. Ex Harlan J Berk with insert ticket. This exact coin is "published" listed/Shown with image on Wildwinds.com database. Copy/paste link: https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/constantine_II/t.html and srcoll down near bottom of page to 'Trier RIC VII 172' Gorgeous Coin, attractive portrait, large flan with unusually wide margins; beautiful reverse of high artistry. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OUR GUARANTEE: All illustrations are of the actual item offered.
