I think I was drawn to painting him, not only for his comic ability, butthe dichotomy of his off screen personality and his on-screen persona. Shortly after the death of his co-star and friend, Phil Hartman, his personal life and comic exuberance began to fade. Dave is depicted here as the sadness of loss is washing through him.
