Uncertain of what has caused it and it might be permanent. It is fortunately on the rear side of the figurine and is not noticeable when displayed with the girl to the viewer's left and the word "HOLLAND" is visible on the front of the base. There are also some dark spots visible on the bottom sideWe have discounted our typical asking price for this item by about 50% to compensate for this condition.
