Item description

This is a vintage H. J. Heinz Co chutney bottle embossed with H.J. Heinz Co on the bottom, Pat'd and the number 49. (Note: I believe the number is 49 but the loop on the "9" is not well defined and it could be an "8" instead) According to the Heinz bottle code, the number indicates the jar originally contained a variety of tomato or pickle chutney. From the sources below, I'd date the bottle to the early 1900s because of the low number, bottle top style, embossing, and shape. The side seam goes to the lip, indicating it was likely machine produced after 1906. The top is missing but was most likely made to pop off as it is not a threaded screw top. My father, an avid bottle digger, found the bottle more than 40 years ago in the ruins of an old homestead in Virginia. The antique Heinz jar is in beautiful shape, free from breaks or cracks. There are scratches and air pockets in the glass along with some light sediment deposit from having been buried for decades. The vintage relish jar measures about 7.75" x 2.25".
