Item description

SPODE CREAMER 1831 Pattern 4733 The body basic is white with a band of cream color decorated with gold leaves and trim. Painted mark 4733 over H mark, in red 6.25" x 4" x 4.75" high (to top of handle) Approximate Dimensions No visible gold loss Marks/dots shown in photos on the interior are grayish The four footed base has 2 slits Spider crazing mark inside Feet have roughness This creamer was part of a Spode Sucrier Creamer Set which was originally tagged as "De Felspar c1815-1827" when it was purchased. A long road of research ensued which became useful as follows. Both the creamer and sucrier appear to have been made from the same composition of porcelain and are similar in weight and feel. These early porcelain pieces were made from various compositions... bone china, felspar and/or stone china. The sucrier (listed also separately, Spode 341) which was paired with this creamer as a set has an established date of having been produced by Spode in 1803; hence, it would not have been dated correctly by the label or made from felspar because... felspar hadn't been introduced by Spode until 1821. In Robert Copeland's book, Spode Copeland Marks and other Relevant Intelligence, 1993 p.117 Summary of Pattern Numbers, "c1800 to 1857 133-9999 Mostly patterns decorated on-glaze: all bodies." p.119 "1803(date) up to (pattern)450" "1831(date) up to (pattern)5050 ". This dates this SPODE 4733 Creamer at 1831. Pictured on p. 14, is a similarly paired Spode Sugar Creamer Set #1112, c1806 (later refined to c1808). This may explain why these two pieces were presented together originally and shows the identical form of the creamer made by Spode in a set, as a pair. When referring to the absence of the Spode name on their pieces and pattern numbers made particularly during the early period, Robert Copeland elaborates on p.15, "Many examples of Spode's ware carry no pattern number. Why not? Indeed, there are many examples which are not even marked with his name!" To summarize, the sucrier, made in 1803, was not dated on the label correctly nor was it made from felspar ias stated on the original label (felspar c1815-1827). The creamer, made in 1831, was also mis-dated by the original label. Re the felspar designation, both pieces weigh and feel similarly; and, from 1822 through 1833 Spode had a felspar backstamp, mark 41, p.56, which it did not use opting instead to hand-write the pattern number. Taking that into consideration, it is determined that this 4733 Creamer is a Spode, definitively dated 1831 by pattern number with an undetermined porcelain composition which could include, but was more than likely not made from, felspar. In addition, the Spode pattern 341 Sucrier with Lid described above is available. Please take a look at that listing and message me to make an offer for both
