Item description

Look at my reviews. These are quality plants. I always include extras. The advantage of mature bulbs is that most will produce bulbils their first year. Bulbils often take 2 years before they begin producing bulbils. Most people are selling bulbils - topsets. I have bulbils as well as plants and mature bulbs. Make sure you know what others are selling. Also, I see people selling mature bulbs with 8 weighing a total of 2 ounces. Mine generally weigh 1/2 - 1 ounce the first year and 1 1/2 to 2+ ounces the 2nd year! After that some grow to 3+ ounces each and in the 4th year they sometimes split into 2 to 5 mature plants. These fry up quickly to beautiful crispy, almost like onion rings without the necessity of a flour coating! We have grown and enjoyed these for over 50 years. Hearty plants which green up soon in the spring and stay green after frosts in the fall so you have a long harvest time. Some people use them in their landscape serving two functions of beauty and food. All are grown in chemical free, richly composted soil. We ship only in the USA and territories, except some counties in IDAHO and OREGON where onion importation is prohibited. We have sold several thousands of these, but each spring and fall we have to start the sales number at zero . Please plant them the same day you receive them. Several photos show mature bulbs as shipped in August through March. You get green plants April through July. In the 9th photo, 1 year old plants are the three on the left. The four on the right are two year old plants. These are very healthy PLANTS and are dug and shipped the same day. Onion plants/bulbs grow in the ground and topsets/bulbils grow in the air on top of the onion plant. These grow best in hardiness zones 3-8, but can also be grown indoors in pots for year around use. They grow 2 to 3 feet tall and then produce small onions on top which are called topsets, bulbils or bulblets. If left on their own, the stalks fall over and the topsets begin growing a foot or two away from the mother plant. They have now "walked" a foot or two away from the parent plant and therefore the walking part of their name. I don't know where the Egyptian part of the name came from. EATING: Use as scallions or onions. When the plant is tender you can cut just the green tops and the bulb will keep growing or you can pull it and use it like a scallion, chopping and using all but the roots. We don't eat the roots. Bulbils or topsets can also be used as an onion. You will find that these onion bulbs are not large but that they have a little more taste to them than many onions. Use where ever you would use an onion. You may like the raw, chopped greens in salads. They can also be used in pickling or relish mixes. A little, often goes a long way. Older leaves are spicier than the young ones. PLANTING: Please plant them the day you receive them. Plants or topsets should be planted about 1 1/2 inches deep and at least 4 inches apart. They like loose, loamy soil. If you have clay soil, add some sand and compost. It is worth making the soil better. I also like to mulch around my plants to reduce weeds and help maintain more even moisture. It also helps build the soil over time. I add SEA-90, kelp, and Mesa Verde humates to the soil so it has lots of organic minerals. A sample of some of our feedback. Great product, and communication, buy here, got more then I planned for.
