Item description

Vintage original 11x14 in. US lobby card from the 1930s comedy/romance FALSE PRETENSES, released in 1935 by the Chesterfield Motion Pictures Corporation and directed by Charles Lamont. A girl who's just lost her job (Irene Ware) meets a drunk millionaire on a bridge who's just lost his money. They go back to his house and eventually come up with a plan to benefit them both: he'll scrounge enough money together to teach her how to be a lady and then introduce her to his rich friends so she can snag a husband, after which she'll pay him a finder's feensue. False Pretenses is the sort of escapist film that they did quite well in the 1930s and, despite a very low budget and mostly no-name actors, the film ends up being quite entertaining. The image features a medium shot of the film's female lead, Irene Ware (as Mary Beekman), wearing a medium orange dress, in the salon of a ship as she is the focus of attention among the 11 men in the room with her (including actor Russell Hopton to the left of her in profile). The film's title is depicted in a bright yellow with a red interior trim against a black background and there is a red and yellow pattern in the lower right portion of the card along with the Chesterfield company logo. This vintage original lobby card is in very fine- condition with a 1/8-in. crease and light signs of wear on the top left corner; a 2-in. long area of scuffing in the top border near the left corner; a light 2-in. horizontal crease beneath the center of the top border in the ceiling; light signs of wear on the edge of the bottom right corner; and a slightly rounded bottom left corner. The color tints are extremely fresh and vibrant with bright yellows and rich reds. False Complications; Chesterfield Motion Pictures Corporation; 1935; dir: Charles Lamont; cast: Irene Ware, Sidney Blackmer, Betty Compson, Russell Hopton, Edward Gargan, Ernest Wood, Lucy Beaumont, Marhsall Ruth, Dot Farley, John Picorri, Herbert Clifton, William Humphrey.
