Item description

Hale, Sarah Josepha. THE LADIES NEW BOOK OF COOKERY: A PRACTICAL SYSTEM FOR PRIVATE FAMILIES IN TOWN AND COUNTRY, New York: H. Long Brother, 1852. 5th ed., brown cloth hardcover w/gilt titling to spine and ornate blind-stamping to both boards, 8vo(7.250x4.5"), good+/n.a., xv, [xvi], 474pp. Binding well-worn particularly at the ubiquitous head and tail, as well as the corners being bumped and rubbed, joints are started, front hinge has been reinforced/repaired neatly with archival grade Japanese tissue paper, light foxing/staining to text, previous owners signature to title page (H.B. Pearson, May 1, 1853 17 East 4thSt.), manuscript recipe for "Snow Cake", tipped onto front paste-down, advertisement for Royal Baking Powder laid in unattached between front paste-down and front free fly-leaf. Quite the useful and interesting artifact and a very solid sector of Captured Tyme! Sarah Josepha Buell Hale (October24, 1788 ? April 30, 1879) was an American writer and an influential editor. She was the author of the nursery rhyme "Mary Had a Little Lamb". Hale famously campaigned for the creation of the American holiday known as Thanksgiving, and for the completion of the Bunker Hill Monument.
