Item description

Vintage original 12 x 18 in. US pressbook from the popular 1930's WWI-themed comedy, IN PARIS, A.W.O.L., released in 1936 by Principal Distributing and directed by Roland D. Reed. The cast includes Lola Lane, Irene Ware, Lawrence Gray, Chick Chandler, George Meeker, Sam Lee, Al Shaw, Richard Tucker, Jack La Rue, George Humbert, John Kelly, Junior Schiemph, and Marty Brooks. The film was re-issued in 1939 and 1940 under the titles Let's Pretend We're Sweethearts and They Went to War and this pressbooks from the 1939 re-release. The front cover opens to reveal a 2-page spreadsheet along with six (6) separate pages stapled along the top on the right side (each one lifts upwards to reveal the next page). This pressbook is complete without any cuts in fine- condition with a 1 in. horizontal tear on the spine approximately 3 in. above the bottom edge which affects every page. This film was not released generally in 1936, but played in select theaters in conjunction with the American Legion, which sponsored the film. According to the Hollywood Reporter review, the play "Comme รงa" was originally staged for more than two million soldiers at the front during World War I and the song "Comme รงa" was originally from the play. This film contains World War I stock footage, according to Hollywood Reporter. PLOT: While attending a show, a World War I veteran has a flashback to his days as a vaudeville performer: When the veteran's female vaudeville partner accuses his male partner of helping to steal a necklace, the male partner breaks off his relationship with her because she is too attentive to another man. The veteran and his male partner then join the army entertainment unit, and the male partner is about to marry another woman when his old love appears, performing in a Paris show to entertain soldiers. The veteran intervenes to reunite his old friends. During a bombing, the woman is caught in a scuffle with the other man in a cellar shelter. The male partner rescues her by fighting her assailant and then proves the man is a German spy. Declared a hero, the male partner wins back his old sweetheart.
