Item description
The Chilean Mapuche are a group of Native American inhabitants of south-central Chile and Argentina. They constitute a wide-ranging ethnicity composed of various groups who shared a common social, religious and economic structure, as well as a common linguistic heritage. Their influence extended between the Aconcagua River and Chiloe Archipelago and later eastward to the patagonian Argentine pampa. The Mapuche make up about 4% of the Chilean population, and today are particularly concentrated in the Araucanรญa Region or in the city of Santiago as a result of rural to urban migration.
The symbology of their indigenous flag consists of a central circular design known as a Cultrun and various background colours.
The Cultrun is a prehispanic percussion instrument used by the Mapuche in Chile as a ceremonial drum and the most important musical instrument in Mapuche culture. As such, it is an emblemic symbol of the Mapuche people. It is used by the machi (healer or sorcerer) for religious and cultural rituals. It is also used during the annual fertility rite of Ngillatun. It represents the earth?s surface, with the four cardinal points drawn on its surface, and between them the sun, moon, stars and various symbols of the elements and world knowledge. The yellow of the culturn, as the symbol of the sun, as such represents renewal.
The blue stripe represents abundance, the green stripe represents nature and the red stripe represents strength.
The stepped cross at the bottom represents handicrafts and knowledge, and its white represents cleansing and healing.
This aboriginal flag measures 60cm by 100cm.
