UP FOR SALE: These pieces of art glass took a very special skill to create and you really do not see many of them at all anymore. Ryukyu Okinawa Japan blown glass fish are handcrafted glass figurines from Okinawa, Japan, characterized by their vibrant colors, unique shapes, and intentional inclusion of bubbles and uneven textures to reflect the island's natural beauty. Originally developed from recycled materials, this distinctive craft art form became a beloved souvenir and a symbol of Okinawan resourcefulness, with many Ryukyu glass workshops like Ryukyu Glass Village offering visitors the chance to see artisans at work and even participate in glass-making classes.
History and Origin
Post-WWII Roots:
The tradition began in the late 19th century but gained prominence after World War II, when Okinawa used discarded bottles, particularly Coca-Cola and beer bottles, to create new glassware.
Souvenir Popularity:
These colorful, handmade pieces, including the glass fish, became popular with American servicemen stationed in Okinawa and are now a sought-after souvenir.
Ryukyu glass traditionally uses discarded bottles and other glass materials, minimizing waste and reflecting a spirit of resourcefulness.
