Presentation of the editor :
This work by Marcel Durliat offers us a masterful synthesis. He invites us to share his renewed vision of Romanesque art by refusing to sift it through an exclusive and reducing theory as to reduce its origin to a unique perspective, distinguishing on the contrary three different foci which will animate its diversity: l Southern Romanesque art, the Ottonian source, the art of northern France. Marcel Durliat at the same time encircles its definition as closely as possible by tackling only strictly religious art, delimiting its duration more rigorously (11th and 12th centuries) finally revealing in a new way the interaction between the work and society . With its admirable color illustrations, the number of which has increased significantly and its exceptional documentation, this text gives Romanesque art the most exhaustive image. With this updated edition and by its extension to Europe (especially Italy, Spain and Germany), this work will remain without rival and certainly still the reference in the matter.
Biography of the author :
Marcel Durliat (1917-2006) is a researcher and teacher, he was the author of fundamental writings on medieval art. Aggregated in history, he held the Chair of History of Medieval Art at the University of Toulouse, which he kept until his retirement in 1979. His major works then appeared: Roussillon Romanesque, Pyrenees Romanes, Haut-Languedoc roman, Roman art and From the Barbarians to the Mil Year (Citadelles Mazenod). In 1990 he published the synthesis of his reflection: The Romanesque Sculpture of the road to Saint-Jacques. From Conques to Compostela.
