A Wangensteen suction apparatus is a modified siphon that maintains constant negative pressure. Used on a duodenal tube, it relieves gastric and intestinal distention caused by the retention of fluid.[1] It was first created by Dr. Owen H. Wangensteen (1898?1981), the Chief of Surgery at the University of Minnesota.[2] His novel approach to the most fatal cause of death during gastrointestinal surgery has since been credited with saving more than one hundred thousand lives.[3] Dr. Owen Harding Wangensteen - 1983 Inductee INVENTOR HALL OF FAME (1898 - 1981) Regents? Professor Emeritus of Surgery at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Wangensteen was a world famous surgeon, innovative medical researcher, educator, and long time chief of surgery at the University. He was chief of surgery at University of Minnesota Hospitals from 1930 until his retirement in 1967. Under his leadership the University of Minnesota became a pioneer in open-heart surgery in the 1950s. This item was purchased at an estate sale and did not come from my home.
