Item description

The NHL All-Star Game, 2000, by Andrew Podnieks, hardcover with dust jacket, published by Harper Collins, 309 pages. Fifty Years of the great Tradition From the dust jacket ----- The NHL All-Star Game had its beginnings in 1908 with a benefit game for Hod Stuart, a star with the Montreal Wanderers who tragically drowned just weeks after helping his team win the Stanley Cup in 1907. In the 1930s, benefit games were played for the families of Ace Bailey, Howie Morenz, and Babe Siebert. These games brought together the top players - the stars of the NHL - in a night of competition that pitted the best against the best. From these roots grew the annual All-Star Game, and on October 13, 1947, as Stanley Cup champions, the Toronto Maple Leafs played the All-Stars in the first official All-Star match. Prior to 1969, the Stanley Cup winners competed against a team made up of the best players from the other teams in the league. Both sides played with their pride and skill on the line in a game that was intensely fierce and competitive. Now, during a week-long celebration, players from a dozen or more countries participate and the game is broadcast around the world. The 50th All-Star Game was particularly memorable for the retirement of Wayne Gretzky's number 99 and its return to where the first game was played-Toronto. The NHL All-Star Game commemorates that game and everyone before it. The stories and anecdotes detail the history of the game. The plays and the players, summaries and statistics, plus rare photographs and memorabilia, make The NHL All-Star Game a book for hockey fans of all ages. The contents include ----- Hod Stuart Memorial Game, 1908 Montreal Ace Bailey Benefit Game, 1934 Toronto Howie Morenz Memorial Game, 1937 Montreal Babe Siebert Memorial Game, 1939 Montreal . 1st All-Star Game, 1947 Toronto-The NHL Establishes a Players' Pension Fund 2nd All-Star Game, 1948 Chicago-The Mosienko Effect. 3rd All-Star Game, 1949 Toronto-The Leafs Dynasty Plays Its Third in a Row 4th All-Star Game, 1950 Detroit-The Stars Get Hammered 5th All-Star Game, 1951 Toronto-A New Format 6th All-Star Game, 1952 Detroit-Another Tie 7th All-Star Game, 1953 Montreal-Le Gros Bill Joins the NHL 8th All-Star Game, 1954 Detroit-Pride of the Goalies 9th All-Star Game, 1955 Detroit-The Production Line l0th All-Star Game, 1956 Montreal-Ted Lindsay's Unbeaten Streak Continues 11th All-Star Game, 1957 Montreal-Howe and Lindsay Reunited 12th All-Star Game, 1958 Montreal-Canadiens Sont La! 13th All-Star Game, 1959 Montreal-A Year of No-Shows 14th All-Star Game, 1960 Montreal-The Rocket Is Honoured 15th All-Star Game, 1961 Chicago-Celebration in the Windy City 16th All-Star Game, 1962 Toronto---:-A Million-Dollar Offer for the Big M 17th All-Star Game, 1963 Toronto-The Big M's Game 18th All-Star Game, 1964 Toronto-The NHL Introduces Two New Trophies 19th All-Star Game, 1965 Montreal-The Governors Capitulate 20th All-Star Game, 1967 Montreal-The Game Goes Mid-Season 21st All-Star Game, 1968 Toronto-In Memory of Bill Masterton 22nd All-Star Game, 1969 Montreal-An Expansion Surprise 23rd All-Star Game, 1970 St. Louis-The Game Starts Rotating 24th All-Star Game, 1971 Boston-Coaches, Not Coaches 25th All-Star Game, 1972 Minnesota-A Suicide Mars the Celebrations 26th All-Star Game, 1973 New York--Greg Polis Shines Brightest. 27th All-Star Game, 1974 Chicago-The Players' Association Gains Strength 28th All-Star Game, 1975 Montreal-A Controversial Suspension 29th All-Star Game, 1976 Philadelphia-Broad Street Rules 30th All-Star Game, 1977 Vancouver-The NHL Goes International. 31st All-Star Game, 1978 Buffalo-The Last of Its Kind 1979 Challenge Cup 32nd All-Star Game, 1980 Detroit-Gordie Says Goodbye 33rd All-Star Game, 1981 Los Angeles-Ennui Sets In 34th All-Star Game, 1982 Washington--Gretzky Champions the Elimination of Fighting. 35th All-Star Game, 1983 Long Island-Gretzky Versus Marini 36th All-Star Game, 1984 New Jersey-The All-Star Team of Injured Players 37th All-Star Game, 198 5 Calgary-The Oilers Reign Supreme 38th All-Star Game, 1986 Hartford-The Players Prepare to Strike Rendez-vous '87, Quebec City 39th All-Star Game, 1988 St. Louis-Mario Finds the Zone 40th All-Star Game, 1 989 Edmonton-The Great One Goes Home 41st All-Star Game, 1990 Pittsburgh-The Inaugural "Weekend" 42nd All-Star Game, 1991 Chicago-The Alumni Seek Pride and Restitution 43rd All-Star Game, 1992 Philadelphia-Meetings Take Precedence to the Game 44th All-Star Game, 1993 Montreal-No Hitting, No Helmet, No Contest 45th All-Star Game, 1994 New York-A Strike Seems Imminent. 46th All-Star Game, 1996 Boston-The Glowing, All-American Puck 47th All-Star Game, 1997 San Jose--Expansion Takes Hold 48th All-Star Game, 1998 Vancouver-A Format Fit for Nagano 49th All-Star Game, 1999 Tampa Bay-The Great One Does It One Last Time 50th All-Star Game, 2000 Toronto-The Game Comes Home All-Time All-Star Game Register All-Star Game Coaching Register All-Star Game Officials' Register All-Star Teams, 1930-2000 All-Star Game Records This book is in a very good condition with some edge wear to the cover of the book and to the upper and lower edges of the dust jacket, and with no writing or other marks in the book.
