Item description

NISSAN ENGEL (1931-2016) "Horsemen" Rare Limited Edition Lithograph Framed in Wood and Glass - 22in x 19in Excellent Condition Original vintage frame has a few tiny nicks and scratches but still shows very well. Email with any questions....thank you. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nissan Engel was born in Israel in 1931. He played the flute as a child and from there developed his affinity for classical music and opera. In his youth, Nissan Engel was always sketching things he saw around him such as still life in his home, settings in the courtyard and teachers at school. At the age of 20, having finished military service in Israel, he entered the Dezalel School of Art in Jerusalem. He began to use biblical and Hebrew symbols in his art and he learnt much about abstract expressionism from his teachers, who were from the Bauhaus School in Germany. From them he learnt the technique of making woodcuts, of drawing and creating collage. After an initial skirmish with set and costume design, Nissan Engel directed his energies solely towards painting and held his first exhibition at the Andre Weil Gallery in Paris in 1960. The exhibition was a huge success, and what followed were the classical phases of the Parisian artistic apprenticeship. In the mid 1960s he crossed the Atlantic to New York and spent 10 years in America, absorbing the pop art of the day. Since the late 1970s, Nissan Engel has lived in the city of his heart, Paris, where he finds his true inspiration from small objects sourced from the flea-markets of the city, such as old sheet music, lace and hand-written letters. Nissan Engel travels a great deal and is much influenced by the mysterious art of Russia and the beautiful colours of Venice. Nissan Engel has exhibited in numerous galleries around the world and his work been collected by many prestigious organisations. Among these are the Jewish Museum in New York, the Weizman Institute in Israel, the Foundation Schlumberger in Paris, the Jaquester Gallery, also in Paris, and the Britt Olson Gallery, Stockholm. --- Email or Text any Questions.....thank you.
