The editors wished to exhibit our 20th century poets as heirs of a great tradition, worthy to take their places beside the masters of the past. This volume has a representation bias toward American poets of the early 20th century.
Published in a popular priced economical manner by Whitman Publishing, nearly 150 stanzas fill 19 topic sections in this book. 148pp.
Harriet Monroe (1869-1936) was an American editor, scholar, and literary critic as well as a patron of the arts. She is best remembered as the founder (in 1912) and an editor until her death of Poetry: A Magazine of Verse. Morton Dauwen Zabel (1901-1964) was an American academic and literary critic. He worked for Poetry: A Magazine of Verse and rose to become the editor-in-chief from 1936 to 1937. He taught at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro from 1944 - 1946, then at University of Chicago from 1947 until 1964.
Hardcover has salmon colored paper boards, but no dust jacket. Spine has been lost as well as ffep, repaired with green library tape. Front page remaining has gift inscription/details. No other marks within text noted. Pages at front have been taped to prevent loss. Paper is light weight and has browned. Cover shows wear through paper at edges. Interior appears complete and securely bound. No marks within body of text noted. Quite usable copy.
