ROYAL COPENHAGEN 1918 Christmas Jubilee Plate Shepherds Keeping Watch is the subject of this 1918 Royal Copenhagen Christmas Jubilee Plate featuring two shepherds standing watch over their flock of sheep as a great light appears in the heavens. The plate has a pinecone border topped by the Christmas Star, similar to the border on most of the annual Royal Copenhagen Christmas plates. Note that the regular 7 inch Royal Copenhagen Christmas plate for 1918 has a similar motif of shepherds watching over their flock of sheep. This plate expands on that theme, making it much larger and more dramatic. The scene is embossed on Danish porcelain and hand painted in under the glaze in gray, quite unusual for Royal Copenhagen, which is widely known for its blue plates and dinnerware (“Copenhagen Blue”). Approximately 14 inches (over 35 cm!) in diameter, one of the largest plates ever made by Royal Copenhagen. Really impressive! Pierced foot for hanging wire. Appropriately marked on the back, including the three wavy line trademark of Royal Copenhagen and the painter’s number 62. Designed by Gotfred Rode, a collectable artist in his own right, who also designed the 1920 and 1928 Royal Copenhagen Christmas plates. Produced in a limited edition of just 49 copies, making it also one of the rarest plates ever produced by Royal Copenhagen. (By comparison, it is estimated that there are about 180 of the better known 1911 “Thief’s Plate”.) Listed in the Royal Copenhagen plate book as plate #178 with a 2004 book value of $5000 to $7000. Like the “Gray Book” before it, the 2004 book has the size listed as 12 inches, which is an error. This is the third one of these very rare plates I have owned in my 40 years of specializing in Royal Copenhagen and they have all been 14 inches. This would be the piece de resistance of any Royal Copenhagen plate collection, stunning in its size and distinctive color.
