Item description

STEVE OF THE "BAR-G" RANCH by Marion Reid-Girardot Independent Publishing Co., 5th Printing, circa 1925 Condition: Very Good- in Good dust jacket Originally published in 1914, this was likely the author's first book. (Two others are known to have been published later.) Quoting the back matter: "STEVE OF THE BAR-G RANCH[, which] has had four editions and has been published in England, is a story of the Western Frontier. The book is unusual, as it is mostly true--a fact that is evident to the most casual reader, as the writer has to know the life before he can write about it so convincingly. The illustrations, which are actual photographs, give an added touch of realism. The author has woven into the story her own romance with Steve who is her husband--who was bortn on the old Bar G Ranch, which is thirty miles east of Denver, and where they were living when this book was written. The characters are real peopl,e and most of the incidents really happened. There is a wealth of life and action and anyone who reads the book feels that he really knows something of what the real West was like." The exterior of the book is generally in nice shape, with just some wear on the top right edge of the spine, and the corners show just light wear. Th bindiing is very firm. The book's main problem is some edge damage mostly affecting the upper margin of ten pages (the worst one is shown in a scan); a few other pages are lightly affected; there are also some other minor edge bumps, along with a few tiny stains, and the pages are toned. Still, no text or illustrations are affected. The jacket has edge tears, chipping and staining, but the wording on the front cover and spine is not seriously affected. Vintage copies of this title are very scarce, especially in the pictorial jacket. Though in fiction form, this is a real find for collectors of Colorado or Western history.
