Item description

A Giant Antique Tintype Photo, and a Cabinet Card Photograph of who we believe is Sarah Ann Hill (Reed). Identified in period handwriting on the back of the cabinet photo as "Sarah Hill, Mamma Hill." See below for additional clarification. Photographer and location not stated. The tintype photo measures approximately 6.5 x 8.5. The cabinet photo measures 5.75 x 9. Condition: These are original photographs, not copies or reproductions. The tintype is in very good condition but reveals a slight oval shape, most likely because it was once displayed in an oval frame. The cabinet photo has surface spotting and the mount has some staining. Comments: These photos were found together at a flea market in Maine. In searching for a Sarah Hill from the time period of these photographs, and given her elderly age in the photos, we discovered a Sarah Ann Hill (Reed) who was born March 23, 1820 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of William Reed, Jr., and Lucinda Reed. The fact that a Reed family cabinet photo (sold separately) was part of this small collection provided additional evidence in the identification of Sarah Hill. (Note: The Reed family photo featured two young children identified as Kaylee Phyllis Reed and dated 1937. It was taken in a Boston studio.)
