Rachel Imeinu?Rachel our Matriarch?is referred to as our mother because she continues to plead and pray on our behalf. Although she did not merit to be buried with her husband, Yaakov, she rests by the side of the road in Bet Lechem. On his deathbed, Yaakov explained that he foresaw with divine wisdom that when the Jews would be exiled, they would pass her grave and pray at her tomb. She would rise up and pray to God on behalf of her suffering children, and He would listen to her prayers, limiting the exile to a mere 70 years. When you view the sculpture from the side, you can see the words: "Refrain your voice from weeping, for there is a reward for your work, and there is hope for your future; your children will return to their border." After crying and praying to Hashem, this verse assures her that she can stop weeping, for her children will return to their land.
