Item description
Authentic, Autographed Antique Black White Publicity Photograph. Depicting radio actor Spencer Bentley. Inscription reads, "To John L. Dickson, with sincerest wishes, Spencer Bentley. Say from Spencer, Atlantic City, Dec. 1924." Reverse side is blank. A photocopy of his on-line obituary will also be included. Measures approximately 8 x 10 including white border. Condition: This is an original autographed photograph, not a copy or reproduction. It is guaranteed authentic. It has some creasing and a repaired chip of the left side white border. Comments: Starting his stage career as a youngster with roles in several plays with Eve Le Gallienne, Spencer Bentley subsequently appeared on Broadway in "Boys From Syracuse," "Little Orchid Annie" and "Furnished Rooms," among other productions. He entered radio as an announcer in the medium's early days. Bentley later became chief announcer, then program director at WNEW, N.Y. As a radio actor, he appeared on "Gangbusters," and later was starred on such shows as "Stella Dallas" and "John's Other Wife." Bentley was the son of Alice Bentley, who was a musical comedy actress on Broadway and on the road, and Wilmer Bentley, who was an actor-director. He also was a nephew of Harry B. Smith, Broadway lyricist, and his wife, Irene, also of the musical comedy stage. He died at the age of 53 on November 27, 1963 in Cuernavaca, Mexico, where he had been making his home for the last few years.
