Item description

Texas Methodist Centennial Yearbook 1834-1934: The Prophet of the Long Trail. This is the story of Methodism from 1834-1934. Illustrated with some twenty-five hundred portraits of persons and places. By Rev. Olin W Nail. Associate Editors - Rev. Sterling Fisher, Rev. R.G. Mood, Rev. Marcus M Chunn, Rev. A.D. Porter, Rev. Cal C Wright, and Rev. H. G. Smith. This is the first time in the history of Texas Methodism that an attempt has been made to present pictorially something of the work and progress of the Church in such an elaborate manner. When John Wesley's heart was "strangely warmed," he came to feel a mighty spiritual concern for all men. His immortal words, "I look upon all the world as my parish," coupled with his insistence upon the witness of the spirit, have become the central themes of Methodism since that day. Nearly two centuries have gone since that eventual hour when Wesley came to know Christ in his pardoning power. Shortly before his death he wrote: "I was considering how strangely the grain of mustard seed, planted about fifty years ago, has grown up. It has spread through all Great Britain and Ireland, and the Isle of Man; then to America, from the Leeward Islands, through the whole of the continent into Canada and Newfoundland. Surely Wesley would exclaim: "What wonders God has wrought." President Theodore Roosevelt said that the preaching of the early pioneer Methodist preachers was one of the chief reasons why the early pioneers were not overcome by crass materialism. When one remembers the swollen streams, the long cold rides over trackless prairies and through dense forest, the pain and suffering incident to such a life, one must realize that America today owes a tremendous debt to these spiritual trail blazers in our early life. This book is in good condition considering its age. Pages are browning but free of writing. Outer edge of pages are speckled. Cover has scuffing, especially along spine. Please see our pictures.
