Item description
Hutton, Richard, Sir, THE REPORTS OF THAT REVEREND AND
LEARNED JUDGE, SIR RICHARD HUTTON KNIGHT; SOMETIMES ONE OF THE JUDGES OF THE
COMMON PLEAS. CONTAINING MANY CHOICE
CASES, JUDGMENTS, AND RESOLUTIONS, IN POINTS OF LAW, IN THE SEVERALL RAIGNES OF
KING JAMES AND KING CHARLES; BEING WRITTEN IN FRENCH BY HIS OWN HAND. AND NOW
FAITHFULLY TRANSLATED INTO ENGLISH ACCORDING TO ORDER. London: Printed by R.R.
for Henry Twyford and Thomas Dring, 1656.
Dis-bound
text block only, 4to (11.5x7.5?), binding copy, [11] (Names of Principal Cases), 1-136, [7] (Table of
Contents), lacking spine, boards and end-papers, text block
complete, with peripheral chipping soiling, and damp staining, most evident in
initial and closing leaves including the title page. Most edge damage, not
effecting text could be removed with a quality rebinding should one desire to
do so. Our preference has been to simply leave it ensconced within its
protective home.
Quite
the marvelous Capture of Tyme have we here. Sir Richard Hutton (1560 ? 26 February 1639) was a
Yorkshire landowner and judge. He initially studied divinity at Jesus College, Cambridge. However, at the age of 20, he
shifted his focus to a career in law. In 1586, he was called to
the bar, and in 1603, he became a serjeant-at-law [sic] under Queen Elizabeth I.
In
1617, King James I, knighted him during a visit to York, and he was appointed
as a judge of the Court of Common Pleas in England. Under Charles I, Hutton
gained respect and even served as acting Chief Justice of the Common Pleas from
December 1625 to November 1626.
