Item description
prand. pr nefrt Egypt
made in Egypt
Akhenaten (also spelled Akhenaten; meaning "the living soul of Aten") was also known before the fifth year of his reign as Amenhotep IV. A pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty ruled Egypt for 17 years and died perhaps in 1336 BC or 1334 BC. He is best known for abandoning the traditional Egyptian polytheism and introducing a new cult centered on Aten, which is sometimes described as a monotheistic or henotheistic religion. Early inscriptions represent Aten with the sun, in comparison with the stars, and later official language avoided calling Aten a god, giving him a solar deity higher status than mere deity.
Akhenaten tried to iron out the traditional religion, but in the end it was not accepted. After his death, traditional religious practice was gradually restored, and after a few years some rulers who were not without clear succession rights from the Eighteenth Dynasty founded a new dynasty, discrediting Akhenaten and his successors, referring to Akhenaten himself as the "enemy" in archival records.
