Item description
Vintage Copper Wall Decoration of Vahagn the Dragon Slayer, Armenian Legendary Patriarch, Armenian Chekanka, Vahagn the Dragon Reaper
Antique vintage copper wall decoration made in Armenia in the Soviet era 1970s or even early in the 1960s which evokes the Armenian God of fire and war, Vahagn the dragon slayer.
Vahagn Vishapakagh (Vahagn the Dragon Reaper, Vahagn the Dragon Slayer) or Vahakn was a god of fire, thunder, and war worshiped in ancient Armenia. Sometime during ancient history, he formed a "triad" with Aramazd and Anahit. Vahagn is derived from *Varhra?n, the Parthian name for the god Verethragna.
According to Armenian myth, Vahagn Vishapakagh was an ancient god of fire, thunder, and war. Styled the Dragon Reaper, he was worshiped extensively in this part of the world before the coming of Christianity. Immortalized in songs now largely lost, Vahagn earned his title though epic struggles with dragons that threatened the people in Armenia and the surrounding areas. So potent were the tales surrounding Vahagn that he was often identified with the Greek hero-diety Heracles. Perhaps one day the missing components of the Dragon Reaperโs tale will be recovered.
