Vintage Elephant Rider Godfrey Houston Ceramic Art Figural Brooch Pin Maharaja Royalty Mahout Howdah Wearable Artwork Pottery Sculpture Artisan Signed One of a Kind Earthenware Clay Hand Crafted Handpainted Enamel Multi Color Colorful Turquoise Gold Red This is a gorgeous figural brooch of an elephant with a mahout (driver) sitting on the elephant’s head. Behind the driver is a Howdah, which is the carriage that sits on the back of the elephant. This one is shown carrying a passenger and is edged in gold with gold trim fringe. Both the driver and the passenger are painted in yellow and red enamel. The elephant is turquoise green enamel with gold painted tusks and a blanket saddle with a red accent and gold. The details are amazing and this is an incredible piece of wearable art. This one of a kind brooch is signed with a stamp of the Artist’s name “Godfrey Houston”. This is most likely from the 1940s to 1950s. It measures approximately 1 inches wide and 2 inches tall. This unique brooch is in great vintage condition as you can see by the enlarged photographs. There is some slight crazing of the finish on the elephant, normal for a piece of this age. For those of you not familiar with the term, crazing happens mostly with age and is a fine network of tiny cracks in the glaze on the pottery. It is not the pottery that is cracking, but the glaze that was put over the pottery. It has a rollover gold tone clasp pin on the back. It would be a nice addition to your collection of elephants or a wonderful gift for an elephant lover. It is truly a wearable piece of art.
