Giovanni DeSimone, born in 1930 in Palermo, Sicily, came from a family of Italian aristocrats. As a child, he spent time in Somalia?an experience that left a lasting impression and deeply influenced his artistic style. His work reflects a love for primitivism and the bold, expressive elements of the Cubist movement, made famous by Picasso, Matisse, and Gauguin in the early 20th century. After World War II, DeSimone moved to Emilia-Romagna, and by the 1960s, he founded the now-iconic Ceramiche De Simone?a ceramic art studio known worldwide for its vibrant and whimsical designs.
