Item description
Blair, John D., SERMONS COLLECTED FROM THE MANUSCRIPTS OF THE LATE REV. JOHN D. BLAIR. Richmond:Shepherd Pollard, 1825. 1st ed., full calf hardcover w/light gilt titling to spine only, 8vo (8.25? x 5?), fair / n.a.,frontis, [3] - 355 pp. Binding is very worn, bumped and rubbed, frontis of Rev.Blair is heavily foxed, text block is foxed, stained and soiled, previous owner?s signatures to front end-papers, library notation on rear paste-down.
John D. Blair was chaplain to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1800 and delivered George Washington?s funeral oration to that body. He was also the pastor of Pole Green Presbyterian Church near Richmond from 1785-1821. Patrick Henry attended Pole Green. It was burned to the ground in a Civil War skirmish. After the Richmond Theater fire of 1811, which claimed the Governor of Virginia among its victims, Blair along with Episcopalian Pastor John Buchanan were instrumental in raising funds for the Monumental Church which sits to this day where the theater stood. Blair was also an early president of the Richmond Library Society.
A delectable - and very collectible - slice of Captured Tyme!
