Phacelia tanacetifolia cannot thrive in shady conditions or in soil that allows water to collect. Clear the area of any weeds. Use a shovel if you don't have a tiller. Spread a layer of topsoil on the area where you are going to plant your Phacelia tanacetifolia seeds. Make your topsoil layer about 1/2 inch thick.
