Item description
CIVIL WAR, FEDERAL, CAVALRY US 14 CHRISTMAS SPUR AND STRAP
Known as the "Christmas Spur" because many examples have a patent date of Dec. 24, 1861 on the inside of one of the arms. Not all examples have the patent date stamp. This does not display the date stamp. It is possible that these were made prior to the date when the spur was patented or that only one of each pair was stamped. 14 point roundel spins freely. Stipled gilt brass horizontal grooved arms, foliated heel design. This gilded officers spur has a nice design along the arms, and is in excellent condition.
It is surprising that a spur could be patented simply because of the decorations, but it was indeed patented by Thomas W. Lyon of New Britain, CT and made by the Russel Erwin Manufacturing Company.
