Item description
CIVIL WAR, FEDERAL ISSUE, ENLISTED, WAIST BELT AND M1839 U.S. BELT PLATE, CA 1863-1865
Original U.S. Enlisted Infantryman?s Accoutrement Belt Plate and Original Leather Belt.
Belt:
The front of belt has an embossed oval ring stamp that is difficult to read. Looks like the maker might be ?F. Chillingworth? or ?SH Young Newark, New Jersey?. Please see images. The original brass keeper is intact and is affixed to the end of the belt. The belt is constructed of two-inch-wide bridle leather, is supple, and displays some minor crazing. Outside of this belt is black, and the inside is buff. The leather belt measures approx.. 38? long, and 2? in width. In 1851, all leather accoutrements became black and all buff leather accoutrements on hand were ordered to be blackened. The belt is in good condition, showing obvious signs of honest wear.
M1839 Belt Plate:
This Federal belt plate is of the regulation 1839 pattern. Constructed in the die-struck and rolled brass face, the brass accoutrement?s face shows a clear ?US?. Face shows only small dings and has a nice mellow patina. Lead filled back retains complete lead fill. No maker?s mark. This is the style with brass ?arrow? hooks; all three hooks remain. The belt plate is the Model 1839 oval ?US? and has brass ?arrow? hooks, tongue and 100% of the lead fill on the back. The back is flat. The face has a nice clean original finish with a pleasing mellowed patina on the raised areas. The back is unmarked. Good condition with some age wear and patina. Both the plate and the keeper have lots of original gilt finish left on them with only minor handling marks or a few small age stains.
This is a strong example of a typical U.S. Infantryman?s belt and plate and is in overall very good condition. An excellent example of an early Union Civil War Soldier?s Waist Belt, as standard issue to soldier?s during the American Civil War! If you are looking for an original Civil War Federal Quartermaster issue item, this is it.
