Item description
? You are buying 60 seeds of Schisandra chinensis, commonly known as Chinese Magnolia Vine. This fast-growing, deciduous, twining vine is native to northern China and the Russian Far East. It produces fragrant flowers in spring, followed by dense grape-like clusters of brilliant red berries in late summer. The berries are highly valued in traditional Chinese medicine and are known as “five flavor fruit” due to their unique combination of sweet, salty, sour, hot, and bitter tastes.
? Type: Deciduous fruiting vine
Mature Height: 20-35 feet
Bloom Time: Spring
Hardiness Zone: 4-10
Uses: Ornamental, edible fruit, traditional medicine, tea, wildlife attraction
? This vigorous climber thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained soil. It requires a sturdy support structure, such as a trellis, pergola, or fence. The leaves are solid green, slightly heart-shaped, and grouped in threes, while the small, white flowers emit a sweet fragrance. In autumn, the foliage turns yellow, adding seasonal interest to the landscape.
? Schisandra berries are used fresh, dried, or in various preparations, including tea, wine, and herbal remedies. The plant is low-maintenance once established but benefits from selective pruning after flowering to encourage additional blooms. For best fruit production, plant multiple vines for cross-pollination.
? Seed Sowing Instructions:
1. Lightly scarify the seeds with sandpaper for better water absorption.
2. Soak seeds in water for 24-48 hours.
3. Stratify in a moist medium at 30-40F for 30-60 days, ideally with fluctuating temperatures.
4. Sow 1/4” deep in well-drained soil and keep moist but not wet.
? Your order will arrive in good condition. If any issues occur upon receiving order, contact us the same day with a detailed description and photos so we can assist you.
