Item description
Bear Grass
Scientific Name:
Xerophyllum tenax
Seed Details:
Quantity: 50 Seeds
Type: Heirloom, Open Pollinated, American Grown Seeds
Growth Type: Perennial
USDA Zone: 4 - 9
Description:
Bear Grass is a resilient and beautiful perennial native to the western United States. Known for its tall, graceful stalks topped with clusters of creamy-white flowers, it thrives in mountainous and meadow landscapes, bringing a touch of natural elegance to any garden. Beyond its visual appeal, Bear Grass has historically been utilized by Native Americans for weaving due to its strong, grass-like leaves. It is also a pollinator-friendly plant, attracting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects.
Growing Instructions:
Bear Grass seeds require cold stratification for best germination unless sown outdoors in the fall. To stratify, mix the seeds with moist sand or peat moss, seal in a bag, and store in the refrigerator for 12-16 weeks. After stratification, sow the seeds on the surface of well-draining soil and cover lightly. Keep the soil moist but avoid overwatering and provide bright, indirect light. Transplant outdoors after the last frost, spacing plants 12-18 inches apart in full sun. Bear Grass thrives in well-drained soil and is drought-tolerant once established.
