Item description
Butterfly Weed (Asclepias tuberosa)
Seed Details:
Quantity: 100 Seeds
Type: Heirloom, Non-GMO, American Grown Seeds
Growth Type: Perennial
USDA Zones: 3 - 11
Height: 28 inches
Description:
Butterfly Weed, also known as Pleurisy Root, is a striking perennial that lights up gardens with its brilliant orange flowers, drawing butterflies and other pollinators. This plant is known for its historical medicinal use by Native Americans, who valued its tough root for respiratory relief. Although also called Orange Milkweed, it notably lacks the typical milky sap found in other milkweeds. Growing this plant from seed is highly rewarding, but it requires patience, as Butterfly Weed takes 2-3 years to reach full flowering maturity.
Planting Instructions:
For fall planting, direct sow the seeds just below the soil surface to allow germination in spring. For spring planting, cold stratify by mixing seeds with moist sand and refrigerating for 30 days before sowing directly. Thin seedlings to the strongest plants, as they don’t tolerate transplanting well. Water young plants until they establish; mature plants are drought-tolerant and thrive in well-draining soil.
