Scientific Name:
Gilia tricolor
Seed Details:
Quantity: Varies
Type: US Native Wildflower, American Grown Seeds
Growth Type: Annual
USDA Zones: 1 - 12
Height: 16 inches
Description:
Gilia tricolor, commonly known as Bird's-eyes, is a charming annual wildflower native to the Central Valley and surrounding regions of California. A member of the Phlox family (Polemoniaceae), this petite bloom is admired for its delicate beauty and ease of growth, making it a favorite in gardens and wildflower mixes worldwide. The small but vibrant flowers create a striking effect when planted en masse, offering an extended blooming season. Though each plant dies after blooming, Gilia tricolor readily re-seeds itself, ensuring a colorful display year after year.
Planting Instructions:
For a fall planting, sow seeds directly outdoors just beneath the soil surface. For spring planting, stratify by mixing seeds with moist sand and refrigerating for 30 days. After stratification, plant seeds in flats or individual peat pots and keep at room temperature. Germination occurs in 2-3 weeks. Once seedlings are established and frost risk has passed, transplant outdoors. While seedlings require regular moisture, mature plants thrive in hot, dry conditions and have high drought tolerance. Avoid overwatering, which can increase disease risk.
