Description: Small Sugar pumpkins are a beloved heirloom variety known for their small, round shape and approximate weight of 7 pounds. Growing Instructions:
Starting Seeds:
For gardeners in short growing seasons, start seeds indoors a month before the last expected frost.
Use peat pots, planting two seeds per pot, and thin to one seedling by clipping the weaker one.
Transplanting:
Harden seedlings off about a week after the last frost or when soil temperatures reach at least 60F.
Transplant seedlings into rich soil, spacing them 8-10 feet apart in rows 10-12 feet apart.
Direct Sowing:
If direct sowing, wait until a week after the last frost.
Plant seeds 0.5 inches deep, 3-4 feet apart, and thin to 8-10 feet apart.
Care:
Protect seedlings from frost, keeping the soil moist without wetting the leaves.
Once vines develop, apply a layer of mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.
By midsummer, pinch off all blooms to redirect the plant's energy towards developing pumpkins.
